VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove family’s own vineyards and carefully selected premium growers. Soils are predominantly red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.

Spring rains allowed the vines to develop a healthy canopy, setting up the 2009 Vintage. It was a relatively cool growing season, the exception being a short heatwave in February. The red varieties ripened in a slow and steady manner, allowing to the fruit to develop bright stable colour, a fine tannin structure and excellent varietal aromatic fl avour. The resulting wines are deep in colour, rich and varietal.

The grapes for this wine were picked at night to make sure that they were as cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation. Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second malolactic fermentation. The wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling.

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
The vibrant red colour with purple hues draw the eyes to the glass, rich aromas of plum and spice with some rustic notes meet the nose. On the palate a range of sweet dark red fruits and more savoury characters create an interesting initial impression following through with a good length of plum fruits, a silky fi ne tannin texture and some toast and sweet vanilla on the length. The Shiraz softens and sweetens the sometimes dour Tempranillo complementing it perfectly.

Murray Pioneer, Riverland Wine & Food - 19.01.10

'In the glass, it is a deep garnet colour. It has aromas from both the tempranillo (cherry, lavender and slightly herbal) and shiraz (ripe berry fruit aromas, reminiscent of raspberries and blackberries), with some sweet vanilla and toasty oak overtones. The palate is supple (a good balance between textures) and of medium weight and length (the textures and flavours are neither intense nor watery, and persist for about a minute or so after tasting).'

Quaff 2010 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Good

'This is a bold, robust crowd pleaser with lashings of vanillin oak, dense redcurrent and blackberry flavours, smooth, thick texture, and substantial tannins. With bangers and mash 'Nine Vines' will appeal to those who love the style.'

Adelaide Advertiser Top 100 - Tony Love - 21.10.09 - 90 Points

'From a great value label known for its rosé more than any other style, this has enticing earthy smells mixed with plum fruit followed by a good grab of flavour and tannin grip that holds vibrant purple berry flavours in the mouth for some great value drinking pleasure.'

Adelaide Advertiser - Tony Love - 09.09.09
Hyatt/Advertiser Wine of the Year Awards 2009

'We head into earthier red wine profiles now, with the pleasure of slight puff of fragrance adding a pretty side to this wine's strong-willed framework at the front of the mouth. The palate does open out, however, with softer spice and lighter, relaxed finish.'

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2010 - 88 Points

'Interesting wine, some multidimensional flavours from the tempranillo running from preserved citrus in chocolate through to cherry and cassis.'

Sunday Tasmanian - Graeme Phillips - 14.12.08

'Initially a bit sweet, thick and chewable Australian mainstream but given a little time in the glass tempranillo's savoury, earthy flavours come through to provide a rich and robust, flavoursome mouthful.'

The Adelaide Advertiser Top 100 - 26.11.08
91 POINTS

Employing one of the most agreeable alternative varieties now making a mark, the Tempranillo here adds some cute, dark cherry aromas and calms down its riper plummy side with a few savoury garden herb and earthier characters. A good little wine gum and jubey pleasure.

The Age - 11.11.08

'This unusual Riverland blend reflects the interest Australian winemakers are showing in the Spanish Tempranillo grape. It's an attractive, savoury red that has complexity beyond its price. Blackcurrant, licorice and spice aromas of good intensity kick it off, and the palate is soft and savoury with light to medium body and an easy finish.'

Sunday Times - Peter Forrestal - 9.11.08

A delightful quaffing red with vanillin oak and ripe plummy characters. Pleasantly soft and smooth, nicely approachable, yet with plenty of grunt.

Mount Barker Courier - 20.08.08

The Angove's Nine Vines Tempranillo Shiraz 2007 does not bite the dust in the arena of Spanish/French varietal blends. Named for the last remaining nine vines of Dr Thomas Angove's vineyards in the Tea Tree Gully area, the wine is a delicious mix of savoury cherry, smooth tannins and spicy oak.

Gourmet Traveller Wine - Max Allen - August 2008

Angove's is one of those labels that you should tuck away at the back of your mind for when you find yourself in an unfamiliar bottle shop with 15 bucks in your pocket: you can confidently pick up almost anything bearing the Angove's name and you won't be disappointed. As well as mainstream crowd-pleasers such as the perennial favourite Long Row Sauvignon Blanc, the Angove's portfolio also features some admirably adventurous blends, including this robustly purple-fruit, satisfyingly chewy tempranillo shiraz.

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from a range of premium vineyards in South Australia. Blending regions as well as varieties gives us a bigger range of options to craft and work with the desired flavours and subtleties that can be found in different climates and soils.

This year saw a long reasonably cool ripening period, broken up by some very warm weather. Tempranillo enjoys the warm weather and shows great potential in Australia, the cool periods also contribute to the wine by helping to produce deep colours. The two varieties were fermented separately and then blended; adding an Australian Shiraz twist to the Tempranillo, some aging with wood has contributed additional complexity and supple structure. The wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling.

On palate a range of sweet dark red fruits and more savoury characters create an interesting initial impression following through with a good length of plum fruits, a silky fine tannin texture and some toast and sweet vanilla on the length. The Shiraz softens and sweetens the sometimes dour Tempranillo complementing it perfectly. Ideal with Bolognaise pasta or bbq'd lamb cutlets.
