REGION:
South Australia, 2011
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from Angove’s own Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the Riverland region. Soils are predominantly red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.
The 2011 Vintage was extremely cool with drought breaking rains finally arriving across most of South Australia’s vineyard regions. This cooler year has been great for aromatic varietal expression, with many of the white varieties harvested later but with lower alcohol levels than in previous years. White varieties also benefited from a juicy natural acidity contributing to excellent palate weight and flavour persistence overall.
Picked late at night to harvest the grapes as cold as possible, the grapes were transported to the winery and pressed using modern membrane tank presses. After cold settling the clear juice was carefully racked to cooled fermentation tanks and inoculated with selected yeasts. Cool fermentation was followed by minimal handling filtration and bottling at the Angove’s winery
WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Pale to medium straw colour with lively green hues. Aromas of new season pear and apple leap from the glass followed by a hint of white peach. The flavours carry through from the initial impression with green apples and firm pears, crisp and clean on the finish. This is a wine that dances delicately in the mouth and caresses the tastebuds.

Sunday Tasmanian - Graeme Phillips - 13.11.11 - “Good”
“A pleasantly crisp, dry, minerally drop true to the grigio style with hints of varietal pear and banana on a smoothly testured, light-weight palate with the fruit and alcohol tending to add a suggestion of sweetness at the end.”
Daily Examiner - 01.10.11 - 8.3/10
“Cat on nine vines? Whip me now.”
Mount Barker Courier - Ross Noble - 06.04.11
“Dazzingly georgeous signorina, soft and easy-going”, enthuses the back label. Clear and bright in the glass, it has violet aromas, apple and pear on the palate and a minerally texture.
Newcastle Herald - John Lewis - 12.03.11 - 4 Stars
“The Renmark-based Angove family wine company consistently over-delivers on price and does so again here. The wine is yellow with faint pink tints and pineapple aromas show on the nose. Zippy kiwifruit flavour comes through on the front of the palate and preserved lemon and spice characters chime in on the middle palate. It won the top gold medal in its class at the 2010 Adelaide Wine Show.”
Quaff 2011 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Bloody Good
'Tony Ingle and the team at Angove made some impressive wines from their Riverland vineyards. This is a powerful and fresh, clean, vibrant and intensely savoury, finishing with some minerally notes. As with all pinot grigios, it’s better with food. In this case, say a spicy Vietnamese chicken stir-fry or a tomato-based sauce in spaghettini.'
WA Today - David Prestipino - 11.12.09 - 91 Points
'Soft supple apple and pear overtones on a lovely long finish. Has guts and pizzazz. Light and easy drinking.'
Quaff 2010 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Good
'Reverberating with the zest of youth, this shows the advantage of drinking these whites while they are fresh and young. It's bright, clean and floral, has good viscosity and tangy, vibrant acidity that finishes long and mild.'
Sunday Tasmanian - Graeme Phillips - 14.12.08
'Citrus and floral nose before fruitier pear and nectarine flavours on a delicate and fresh light weight palate finishing very short but with a pleasant, refreshing crunch.'
The West Australian - Great Whites Under $15 - 20.11.08
'Fairly true to the varietal characters of the variety with some apple and spicy pear brushed with a little muskiness. Fine, light delicate palate designed with summer-afternoon quaffing in mind.'
Quaff 2009, The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Peter Forrestal
Rated 'Pretty Good'
'This Riverland pinot grigio is soft, round, and attractive current
drinking thanks to its savoury characters and lingering dry finish. Try it with a Vietnamese stir-fry chicken dish.'
The Border Mail/ The Key Review - Max Crus - 1.8.08 - 8/10
'Fast out of the blocks and surprisingly spiffy at that.'
QHA Review - July 2008
'Led by the stunning, multi award winning Grenache Shiraz Rose, Angove's Nine Vines range has gone from strength to strength since its initial launch in 2003. 2008 marks the launch of Angove's first ever Pinot Grigio also under the Nine Vines label. This variety is showing massive growth in Australia and is a natural fit in the Nine Vines range of stylish, modern wines. "Pinot Grigio is a variety that needs a deft touch to coax out its true varietal style," stated Warwick Billings, Angove's chief winemaker. "The result is a fresh lively wine with fresh fruit flavours that dances delicately on the palate." Only 1000 cases of this new releases have been produced for the Australian market.'
Sunday Tasmanian - Graham Phillips - 13.07.08
'Citrus and floral nose before fruitier pear and nectarine flavours on a delicate and fresh lightweight palate finishing very short but with a pleasant, refreshing crunch.'
Independent Weekly - Philip White - 4.7.08 - 89 Points
'This little honey could have been made from Anjou I and Rocha pears - that's precisely what it smells like. It's a testament to the nous of the new atmosphere at Angove, that such a variety can be grows in the hot Murray Valley and still taste this good, although it includes. Fruit from far cooler sources, like Wrattonbully. The flavours are creamy and pear-like, just as the bouquet hinted, and the finish is neat, velvety and dry. It's much better wine than most of the more expensive pretenders from, say the Adelaide Hills or Marlborough. Chook, onions and herbs, cooked in cider.'
Daily Telegraph - Jeff Collerson - 28.6.08
'This is the first pinot grigio under the value-for money Nine Vines label. Winemaker Warwick Billings sums it up as: "Fresh and lively and dancing delicately on the palate." Shows hints of the variety's characters of nuts, pears and peaches.'
Herald Sun - Paddy Kendler - 17.6.08
'The pinot gris/grigio revolution rolls on. It seems that every second or third winery now has a version, though in most cases clearly made from fruit grown on immature vines. This addition to Angove's deservedly popular Nine Vines range smells and tastes like it was just drained from the tank and bottled, somewhat yeasty but with distinctive pear and apple varietal characters. It's fresh and fruity, soft and simple and easy to enjoy.'
REGION:
South Australia, 2010
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from premium vineyards in the cool Wrattonbully sub region of the Limestone Coast and the Riverland of South Australia including Angove Family Winemakers own estate.
2010 was one of the best vintages of the past decade with periodic rain in the off season and better water allocations in many of Australia’s grape growing regions. The cool lead into the growing season and absence of ultra hot periods during maturation ensured the grapes ripened slowly, retaining excellent acidity and with flavours developing fully.
Harvested during the cool light of dawn to ensure no loss of flavour intensity the fruit was then transported to the winery and pressed using modern membrane tank presses. After settling the cold clear juice was carefully racked and inoculated with selected yeasts. Slow, controlled fermentation was followed by minimal handling filtration and bottling at the Angove Estate.

New season pear and apple aromas leap from the glass followed by a hint of white peach. The flavours carry through from the initial impression with green apples and firm pears. Finshing crisp and clean, this is a wine that dances delicately in the mouth and caresses the tastebuds.
