Brightlands Cabernet Merlot

Brightlands-Cabernet-Merlot

  1. $14.00

REGION:
Limestone Coast, South Australia, 2008

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards planted on the ancient soils of the Limestone Coast. Previously a sea bed, these soils are terra rossa and sand over limestone and are perfect for premium red wines.

2008 was an early vintage with good ripening conditions in January and February, followed by some extreme heat in March. Disease pressures were low, but ripening was quite fast putting emphasis back on the winemakers to manage grape harvest timing carefully.

Perfect integration of this wine was achieved with the 18 months spent in small oak barrels. The wine then had minimal handling prior to filtration and bottling at the Angove Family Estate.

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Deep red colour with purple hues this is a medium-full bodied wine typical of its origins. Blackcurrant and mint on the nose combine beautifully with the plummy fruit fl avours apparent on the palate.  Soft cigar box oak nuances finish the wine, leaving a lingering finish.

An ideal food wine to be enjoyed with a variety of dishes including a roast leg of lamb, grilled steak with mushrooms or tomato based pasta dishes.

TECHNICAL:
Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot
Alcohol: 14.5% alc/vol
Total Acidity: 6.7 gms/l
Residual Sugar: <1 gms/l

Winestate Vol 32 Issue 6 Nov/Dec 2009 - 3 Stars

'Mulberries mingle with leather on the nose, while the palate is savoury and Bonox-like. Grippy end.'
Newcastle Herald - John Lewis - 25.11.09
3 Stars

'Brightlands was the name of the original winery in which Dr T.W.Angove, the founder of the Angove family wine company, made his first wines in 1886. Angove now uses the name on its well-priced, easy drinking range. The 2007 cabernet sauvignon-merlot blend is purple-tinged crimson and has tobacco leaf scents. The front of the palate has juicy mulberry flavour, followed up on the middle palate by herbal, minty fruit characters and charry oak. Tight ferric tannins show at the finish.'
Adelaide Advertiser Top 100 - Tony Love - 93 Points

'Another label from the Angove portfolio, this wine has spot on cabernet cassis character with herbal and mint chocolate elements entwined with expressive fruit, great tannin structure allowing lovely textural lines and intense cabernet to rule.'
James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2010 - 87 Points
4 Stars

'A clean varietal wine; cassis and a touch of plum; medium-bodied with fine tannin on the finish.'
Huon Hooke - Sydney Morning Herald - 28.4.09 - 87 POINTS

From Limestone Coast grapes, this has good weight and richness for its modest price. Cassis, mulberry and blackberry aromas, laced with hints of soy sauce and iodine - better than it sounds! Forward for an '07, but that's an asset for a drink-now red.
Sunday Tasmanian - Graeme Phillips - Page 17 - 25.01.09

Deep ruby in colour with a distinctive herbal and fresh peppermint nose, mint also dominating the fairly straight-forward, mid-weight palate and adding a refreshing tang to the finish. Too minty for my taste but some will love it.
West Australian - Ray Jordan - 27.11.08 - 85/100

Brightlands Cabernet Merlot, which has just been added to the Angove range is a tremendous wine. In fact, it is yet another example of why Angove is one of the most improved producers in Australia.A neatly put together blend from the Limestone Coast. Medium-bodied with a bouquet of mint and red berry set against a background of lightly toasted oak. Fruit-driven style with fine tannins. Well balanced and persistent on the finish.
Echo - David Plant - 8.11.08

Brightlands is a new label from Angove's that takes advantage of the fruit produced from the cool climate and rich soils of their Limestone Coast vineyards. There are two wines bearing the Brightlands label, a crisp, clean 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend that will please the many fans of this wine style and a lovely rich, fleshy 2007 Cabernet Merlot that is exceptional value at its RRP of $15. These two excellent Limestone Coast wines should be appearing at your local liquor outlet in the very near future.

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards planted on the ancient soils of the Limestone Coast. Previously a sea bed, these soils are terra rossa and sand over limestone and are perfect for premium red wines.

2007 will be a vintage remembered for many years. The ongoing drought resulted in tough water restrictions while heavy frosts followed in August and in the early part of the growing season.

Bud damage and difficult weather during flowering meant that crops across the country were down, in some cases by up to 50%.

These low yields ripened very early and grapes were harvested up to a month ahead of the normal picking times.

Perfect integration of this wine was achieved with the 18 months spent in small oak barrels. The wine then had minimal handling prior to filtration and bottling at the Angove Family Estate.

WINEMAKERS' NOTES:
